 invisible war recovery program

The professionals at Serenity Trauma Healing Center have an expertise in dealing with all kinds of trauma. Most recently, Serenity has designed and implemented an intensive treatment program for veterans suffering from MST (Military Sexual Trauma). This program is inspired by and has begun working with the women from the Academy Award nominated documentary, "The Invisible War." The work with these women has been funded by one of the executive producers of the documentary Regina Scully and her Artemis Rising Foundation.

The treatment program is a two-week-long intensive and is a combination of individual and group therapy in a variety of modalities. Serenity has conducted two MST programs for a total of 12 women. The program was a huge success, and it was highlighted by Katie Couric on her nationally syndicated show. You can view it in our media section.

 Testimonials

"Before I attended this program, I suffered from severe symptoms of PTSD from MST. Nightmares, intrusive thoughts, relationship difficulties, lacking confidence in my parenting, agoraphobia, substance abuse of VA Pain medication and hyper-vigilance. In this program, I was introduced to Somatic Therapy and EMDR, which have never been offered to me in a VA setting. I truly believe that the combination of these two therapies, along with the camaraderie and understanding I experienced from both the staff and the other veterans, I have processed this trauma out of my body. After 18 years of being totally disabled by PTS, I was finally able to punch, kick, yell and appropriately react to the pain of having been raped by a fellow airman.
I can undoubtedly say that I am 50% better than I was and my heart and brain are now free to be proactive about eradicating MST instead of being victimized by the experience."

"The program was amazing! I don't know if I'll ever fully be able to put into words how truly healing it was. I haven't had a nightmare in weeks and the somatic and EMDR therapy was perfect for me. Having a safe a place to allow all the bad to surface and be able to process it was exactly what I needed. I absolutely loved the equine therapy, and movement classes. The art therapy made my heart rise to the surface and it was good to feel so alive again. I strongly recommend anyone suffering from trauma give your mind and soul this amazing opportunity to heal."

"I am so thankful that you all took a chance on me. You saved my life. This was the last time I was going to ask for help. I was planning on leaving my life because I could not bear one more expectation on me that I could not fulfill. I was so tired of seeing the disappointment in everyone’s eyes that looked at me. I was perpetually the victim, punished myself, and never allowed myself joy because I didn't feel I deserved it.

Everyone that was involved with treating me is on my hero list. Sometimes I feel like I can never repay how much you have all done for me. I cannot believe there are people that care about me when they do not even know me. Karol and Joanne are invaluable assets to the program. I have never felt as safe as I did with them. They were the parents I never had. Nancy and Joanne were the best listeners. They made it okay for me to ask for what I needed and actually did it or explained why it couldn't be done. I loved it. I honestly do not believe the program could be as successful without those three being a main part of the program. They sacrificed themselves, their family to be accessible to some forgotten veterans that the VA has forgotten about.

I do not have words to express to the donor of the program. I find it amazing that someone would pay so much money to help me. I will repay you by living a full life of joy, love, acceptance, celebration of kindness, and gentleness. I will take care of myself and believe I am worthy of it all since you all cared enough about me to help me. This will end the cycle of my family history. My husband is changed too along with my kids, friends, etc. You all are doing such good that will effect generations. I have lost ten pounds, lactose free, accept my limitations, ground often, listen to my inner voice, love myself, take care of myself, no longer feel the need to punish myself, am joyful, and humble. I am a changed person! I could go on and on but will stop now... Thank you all again."

“I was a sceptic at first. But after the first week, I was able to open up and start to reconnect with society as well as myself. I thought it would never be possible to "feel" again.”

“I have to start by thanking the staff for all the exceptional work they do to help their clients.  Serenity Trauma Center is a gem of a program for healing and working through difficult trauma. The staff are some of the most caring and nurturing individuals that I have had the pleasure of working with thus far. From the moment you walk in the door it is easy to feel the serene and calming nature of the center.  I was always greeted with a smile and more often than not, Joey, the therapy dog was there to help me feel welcome.

Dr. Mednick is a truly gifted practitioner as she just seems to know exactly what you are trying to say, even when you are having trouble actually saying it. She creates such a safe environment to be in that it really helped me feel comfortable working through my issues that I had previously struggled with. The transition between sessions felt almost seamless as the other therapists were able to pick up right where I had left off in a previous session or knew what still needed to be worked on.

I'm so grateful to have found Serenity and I highly recommend the program to anyone who has trauma they need to work through. It has changed my life and from what I heard, chatting with other clients in the reception area, it has made a huge impact on others as well.

Thank you Serenity Trauma Center!!”

“I first heard about Serenity Trauma Healing Center from a new friend who was recently discharged from the U.S. Army after serving over 21 years as a Green Beret.  He was in combat zones around the world including Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, and Somalia to name a few.  He was forced to retire as a result of injuries received in combat.  In addition to his wounds and traumatic brain injury he was diagnosed with PTSD.  This true American hero went to the Veterans Administration for his PTSD and found the existing treatment programs very inadequate and his ability to get immediate care was nonexistent.  He then was referred to Serenity Trauma Healing Center.  What he discovered truly saved his life.  He was completely impressed with the treatments and all of the staff.  The man is very hesitant to recommend other veterans to treatment facilities but with me he insisted I check it out.

I am a Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Army with the 5th Special Forces Group and completed two combat tours in Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia. Besides the flesh wounds and malaria I was later diagnosed with PTSD.  I managed to live a somewhat functional life but I had three divorces along with way.  Most people said I seemed to be angry most of the time.  I also sought treatment from the VA but found the turnover in therapists and the fact that my therapists schedule only permitted him to see me every three months.  Many of the latest treatments for PTSD were not offered by the VA.  So I also visited Serenity.

The entire staff were professional, talented, knowledgeable and caring.  They truly made me feel that I was the most important patient under treatment.  I am a fairly conservative person and considered some of the protocols "new age."  But once I decided to keep an open mind i found the counseling, treatments and the entire programs to be an amazing blessing!  Even though many of the events I experienced occurred over 45 years earlier we worked through these issues one by one. For the first time in decades I was actually able to sleep through the night!

I can go on and on in detail proclaiming the treatment, care and love I was shown.  The professionals at Serenity Trauma Healing Center gave me back my life. For this I am eternally grateful.  The fact that they will treat every veteran for free is another amazing thing about this wonderful Center.  I can only say that I would never hesitate referring anyone to this center. I have spoken with other patients who have been treated for addiction, phobias, relationship issues and each person expressed complete satisfaction with Dr. Mednick and her entire staff. In my opinion Serenity Trauma Healing Center is one of the finest treatment centers of its kind on the West Coast.”
