In America, sugar addiction is a real problem. Many people can’t go a single day without their sugar fix of choice, which can lead to serious health problems. Processed sugar affects the way our brain functions, especially our memory. However, there is some good news, natural sweeteners like stevia, seem to be a better option.
So, how exactly does sugar affect your memory? Well, sugar increases inflammation in the body which is associated with ADHD, depression, and an overall decline in cognitive ability. Each year on average, Americans consume approximately 140 pounds of sugar. Refined sugar is 99% pure calories, and it is void of any nutrients. This causes your blood sugar to spike, triggering the release of insulin. However, not long after this, your blood sugar drops, creating the craving for more sugar.
Artificial sweeteners are also not a good option when it comes to preserving brain function. Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal), saccharine (Sweet ’N Low), and sucralose (Splenda) are just some examples of popular artificial sweeteners that many people use daily. These can also contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, heart problems, diabetes, metabolic problems, and other symptoms of illness. A 2018 study in Nutritional Neuroscience concluded that “aspartame may be responsible for adverse neurobehavioral health outcomes.” It is best to avoid these types of sweeteners if you can.
The best option is, of course, a natural sweetener. Stevia, honey, agave, date syrup, and coconut sugar are some examples of great alternatives to highly processed sugars. These sweeteners have no effect on cognitive function and do not spike your blood sugar in an unhealthy fashion.
